Our overall objective is to develop collaboration between European and Chinese Specialist in Biomedical Research and/or Chinese Herbal Medicines (CHM) in order to:

  • Give directions for the application of functional genomics to in vivo studies of CHM
  • Optimise research opportunities on CHM through planning coordinated efforts for future directions
  • Establish best practice for animal studies of CHM in the EU
  • Link together European and Chinese experts in the field

Interaction with other WPs:

WP5 is actively collaborating with WP4 (in vitro studies), WP3 (toxicology) and WP6 (clinical studies). In fact, participants in our WP5 are also participants in other WPs, including WP3 and WP4.

Potential WP impact:

WP4 and WP5 are defined as the core value of the project, since the therapeutic values of CHM should be evaluates using in vivo and in vitro settings. Moreover, in coordination with WP6, the pharmacology of CHM in animal models and patient will be discussed. Guidelines proposed by WP5 will significantly promote the understanding of TCM. Drugs should be first tested in animal models before moving on clinical trials. Diagnosis in patients as well as in animal models in a TCM way “Zhenghou” might be difficult but it will be critical for TCM efficacy evaluation. WP5 will deliver guidelines for non conventional diagnosis methods in animal models. Functional genomic studies to be applied to animal models of TCM will be another novel and relevant deliverable for our WP.
